tTo be honest, I have never heard of him before until 3 weeks ago. I was sitting in front of my screen and trying to write a introduction text about someone I just saw once in my life but never spoke to. Someone I only started googling the past few days. I got goosebumps a few times while reading about Grayson Perry. But how could I present you a not crooked statement after so little research. Therefor I thought that the more honest way to introduce him in this photo blog post is by just copy-pasting the text form the wall at the exhibition itself. These pictures were taken at the vernissage last Thursday in the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht.
"The British artist Grayson Perry is often considered a thorn in the side of the mainstream art world. Aesthetic questions of beauty and craftsmanship are played out keenly in relation to social issues from religion, identity, class and consumerism to politics. In doing so, he uses a huge variety of traditional media. This exhibition demonstrates Perry's versatility by showing his ceramic works, tapestries, cast-iron sculptures, prints, films sketchbooks, a motorbike and even a permanent building in the North Essex countryside.
Born in Chelmsford, Essex in 1960, Grayson Perry lives and works in London. Perry is a great chronicler of contemporary life, drawing viewers in with beauty, wit, affecting sentiment and nostalgia as well as fear and anger. His hard-hitting and exquisitely crafted works reference his own childhood and life as a transvestite while also engaging with wider social issues. In 2003, he won the prestigious Turner Prize for his striking pots and was elected member of the Royal Academy in 2012. Recently he has won two BAFTA Awards for his two television series created for Channel 4, which explored subjects of taste and identity in contemporary Britain. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to contemporary art in 2013.
Grayson Perry is now one of Britain's best-known contemporary artists whose work is exhibited and held in museum collections worldwide.
